By Kyle Fitzsimmons, InsuranceAgents.com Staff Writer

Take Your Pick From Our List Of Quality Auto Insurers

When looking for the right auto insurance for you, it’s important to keep in mind that you have options in the form of a variety of auto insurers. The best way to exercise these options is to go to our online quote forms and shop for car insurance quotes and talk to a wide array of auto insurance agents. However, before you start shopping it’s important to educate yourself on the background and reputation of some different auto insurers so you can streamline your search to include just the cream of the crop.

The results of a 2008 national auto insurance study conducted by J.D. Power and Associates shows that several auto insurers--some you may not even have heard of--rank among the best across the board. Below is a list of the highest-rated auto insurers included in the study with a brief rundown on how they ranked in several key subcategories.

  • Amica Mutual
The award-winner of the survey, Amica Mutual ranked among the best auto insurers in all five categories: overall experience, policy offerings, pricing, contacting the insurer, and billing and payment. Founded in 1907, Amica Mutual Insurance Company is the oldest mutual insurer of cars in the U.S. Although its headquarters are in Lincoln, Rhode Island, Amica Mutual has subsidiary branches spread throughout the continental U.S. Amica Mutual operates in every state except Hawaii.
  • State Farm
Not far behind Amica Mutual in the rankings of auto insurers is State Farm. Rated among the best in contacting the insurer and better than most in overall experience, policy offerings, and billing and payment, State Farm is one of the more well known auto insurers that also provides quality service. Established in 1922, State Farm has been the country’s largest auto insurer since 1942, providing coverage for one out of every five cars on the road.
  • Erie
Ranking very highly in all five categories on the study, Erie offers auto insurance that is among the best in pricing and better than most in overall experience, contacting the insurer, and billing and payment. However, if you’ve never heard of Erie you are not alone. Beginning in 1925 in Pennsylvania, Erie prides itself in not operating like most big insurance companies and that’s because they aren’t very big. Erie Auto Insurance is only available in 11 states: Illinois, Indiana, Maryland/D.C., New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. If you live in these states then Erie Auto Insurance might be your best option among auto insurers.
